Walking Safely in a Winter Wonderland
Winter can be a beautiful time of the year, when snow is gently falling and glistening on tree branches. With the beauty of season comes hazards associated with inclement winter weather. Ice and snow can be very dangerous for pedestrians, especially seniors and those using mobility aids.
Seniors must take extra care when walking in slippery conditions to avoid falls & injury. Below are some winter walking safety tips to help you stay warm avoid potential slips:
v Dress appropriately for the weather- wear layers, gloves, and something to keep your head warm and dry
v Take your time and walk carefully
v Wear boots with good tread on the soles
v Wear bright clothing so you are visible
v Keep your hands out of your pockets to aid your balance and prevent tripping
v Walk with a buddy, or tell a friend or family member your route if you are going out solo
v Avoid going out in stormy, hazardous weather if possible; wait until walkways have been cleared of ice and snow
